Presenter:
Where do you go for help and who do you ask if you’re not coping?

Business Student (India):
Most of the times I ask for help from my friends and if at all they really can’t help me out I just go to the student services. They are really kind in helping me out.

International Student Advisor (International Student Services, QUT):
Yes the students need to seek assistance from their counsellor when they feel that there is some issues that they cannot deal with by themselves. They need to find help and it would be ideal if they contact counseling services or international student services just when they start feeling that they can’t cope, otherwise at anytime is OK.

Public Health Student (United States):
If I was having trouble while I was here I would definitely talk to my supervisor. He is very helpful; if its figuring out where to go eat, what to do or if I’m having trouble with my classes or scheduling really anything I’ve been able to go to him for - and also my peers are very helpful and they’re very, very helpful for just figuring out day to day things, as well as school.

International Student Advisor (International Student Services, QUT):
Well students would find that they have difficulty with coping when they feel very stressed, they have problems with concentration with sleeping with eating and they start isolating themselves. These are the basic symptoms of not coping and it’s really important they start seeking help very early.

Business Student (India):
If there is anything wrong academic- wise I just try and go discuss with the lecturers, they are really good like they have good knowledge they have experience in teaching, they help me out with the academic stuff and they have really good knowledge and they are motivated too. They try to motivate me to tell me what to do for the academics and they give me real world experience.

International Student Advisor (International Student Services, QUT):
With the confidential counselling students need to know that counsellors don’t talk to anybody about their issues; not to academic staff, not to administrative staff and if we need to act on behalf of the student the counsellor would always need to ask the students permission to release that information.

Psychology Student (Sweden):
A really important thing to remember to be successful, I think, for overseas students, is to try to utilise all the resources that are here. So, for instance, there are people that might help you with your language, who might try to orient to the university and the culture and that sort of thing, so make sure you ask for help.

Business Student (India):
Yeah most of the support, whatever support you need, it’s available in the uni and they really help you out, they are really ready to help always ready to help you out.

International Student Advisor (International Student Services, QUT):
Well we would like students to come and see us whenever they feel that they would like to talk to somebody, they need to know that we are here for them, we are here and busy and wanting them to come, wanting them to share their problems. Just because they cannot solve the problem by themselves doesn’t mean they are not good or they’re not coping completely. Sometimes students need occasional help and we would really like them to talk to us.
