Getting Feedback (Video 18)

Scenario (Facilitator feedback)

Presenter:
Do you want to know how you are going on prac? You need feedback. The best person to ask is your supervisor. Let’s watch this student asking her supervisory for feedback.

Clinical Facilitator:
Hi Ellen. Thanks for agreeing to see me today. I’ve just had some feedback that I need to talk to you about. Some of the nurses on the ward and the facilitators you’re with have been talking to me about the communication that you’ve been demonstrating. I’ve received some feedback from the ward that they’re a little concerned that you are not asking questions while you’re on placement, particularly with regard to, for example, this order. Your buddy nurse showed you and you went ahead but she realised you weren’t doing the right thing and that was because you didn’t understand what was being asked of you. It’s really important that you do ask questions when you don’t understand things, particularly with regard to orders because patient safety is the point that we are trying to get to and when you are on clinical placement, registered nurses and doctors need to feel sure that by asking questions you are identifying the stuff you do need to know if you don’t know it. Can you tell me how you feel about asking questions while on placement?

Nursing Student (Ellen):
Well, I feel bad because I don’t want to keep asking them again and again if I don’t understand and sometimes I look very stupid and I don’t want to disturb them from working.

Clinical Facilitator:
Right. It’s really important that you do ask questions because the clinicians and the doctors expect that of students. They become worried when student don’t ask questions because it makes them think that perhaps you don’t understand but you’re going ahead anyway so it’s really important for your patient’s safety that you ask whenever you don’t understand, if anything is unclear. That’s important for you to do. So can you tell me now how you would change how you will ask questions and what questions you will ask.

Nursing Student (Ellen):
I will ask questions whenever I don’t understand or when I am not sure about the order from the buddy nurse. Also I will ask questions of the patients if they want me to do something so I am sure I will not do anything wrong or not expected.

Clinical Facilitator:
Good. I think it’s good that you think about asking questions, seeing as that this is what makes it safe for the patient and that the buddy nurse feels confident that you are doing what you need to do.

Nursing Student (Ellen):
Alright.
